DON'T BE TAKENIf you are over your head in credit card or any unsecured debt, chances are you have contacted or have been contacted by a debt consolidation, credit counseling or debt settlement company Who will claim to be able help. These companies begin with asking you all kinds of personal questions, not to mention asking you for your personal information; a risky proposition in today's world of identity theft.
DON'T BE TAKEN
These companies will promise you all kinds of instant relief, from taking your creditor phone calls, to getting you out of debt in an impossibly short amount of time. Companies like this will never tell you the pitfalls of their services. For example, debt consolidation requires that you apply for another loan. Nearly impossible if you have bad credit. Credit counseling requires that you adhere to a strict budget set up by a stranger and have your credit cards taken away. Or, have a "counselor" set up a reduced payment plan with your credit card company, while they collect a large up-front fee from you and a monthly maintenance fee, all while collecting a fee from your credit card company. You might as well file for bankruptcy because; credit counseling will be reported as bad credit.
